How I Fit

My fit process comprises three components:   The subjective, where I use my trained eye and experience to evaluate a position on the bicycle; the objective, which is provided by our own pre-fit assessment and the precise 3D measurement of our Retul motion capture system; and, perhaps most importantly, your feedback. Specifically I ask specific questions that relate to pedal smoothness, efficiency and where a subject feels pressure or discomfort.  This ensures a true collaborative approach. All three form the foundation to a successful fitting process.

I have a decade of applying these three elements. It is a comprehensive process that is tailored to you, and takes into consideration your comfort level, cycling history, injuries and other factors that are unique to you.  This is the way it should be.

This fit is conducted on your own bike set up on a trainer. I will evaluate your position utilizing standard tools of the trade including a measuring tape, plumb-bob, goniometer, laser and adjustable stem.

The Static Fit session includes:

  1. Personal interview to determine riding style, goals, physical concerns and limitations.

  2. Comprehensive Pre-fit physical screen and assessment.

  3. Adjust cleats for ideal starting cleat position.

  4. Fitting process based on Analyze, Adjust, and Reassess system.

  5. Post ride report with personal off-bike exercises improve fit and performance.

Advanced 3D Retül (Dynamic) Fit For Road & all other bikes EXCEPT Triathlon/TT Specific

The Retul fit offers greater measurement precision and more closely mimics the way you ride on the road. The Advanced Retül fit is appropriate for anyone who wants the most advanced system on the market for measuring a rider's position on the bike.

Retul is not a fitting system, and it doesn’t replace an experienced fitter. It is simply the most powerful fitting tool on the market and measures the rider with true 3D accuracy WHILE you pedal the bike under load. Whether you're a racer looking to finish on the podium, or a century rider looking to finish strong and in comfort, a Retül fit can give you that edge.

Our Advanced Retül Fit session includes:

  1. Initial interview to review riding history, past relevant injuries, riding goals and current fit goals.

  2. Body measurement to determine inseam and body proportions.

  3. Physical assessment to screen for leg length assymetries, flexibility and range of motion; Evaluation of foot/hip/knee kinetics, structural differences and functional strength.

  4. Check for neutral cleat position

  5. Dynamic testing on your bike using Retül's 3D Motion Capture technology to determine proper positioning. Perform on each side to determine any asymmetries.

  6. Adjust bike to make the necessary improvements and retest with Retül to compare. Repeat the process as many times as needed to achieve the optimum position.

  7. Capture the geometry of the bike using the Zinn feature of Retül. Key measurements provided in report.

  8. Receive a Retül-generated report of all the key measurements of your position on the bike, both before and after.

  9. Follow up session within the first month to fine tune the fit, as necessary.

Advanced 3D Retül Fit on Dynamic Fit Unit For Triathon/TT Specific Bikes Only

The Retul motion capture fit system combined with the infinite adjustability of the our Purely Custom fit bike ensures the best measurement/adjustability protocol to completely dial in your triathlon or time trial position.  The primary advantage of the Purely Custom is that it allows us to make real-time, on the fly adjustments as you pedal. There is no stopping and getting off the bike to make manual saddle and stem changes. You get real-time feedback to even the slightest changes in handlebar and saddle position.

Our Advanced Retul  session includes the same steps as in the Retul Fit outlined above.  The main difference is that the dynamic testing is done on on an infinitely adjustable fit bike instead of your own bike.  Once your ideal XY coordinates are determined, we will then set up your existing bike to match.

Bike Finder Fit - For Road, Triathlon/TT and All Bicycle Types

Our Purely Custom fully adjustable fit bike, in combination with Retul motion capture, allows us to find your optimal fit using our Retul motion capture BEFORE you purchase your bike. We test all the adjustments that go into getting the perfect bike in virtual space, then convert the coordinates we get into bike geometry we can then use to find the perfect fitting bike size, style or brand.

At the end of the process, I’ll provide each customer with a New Bike Fit Report. It indicates your ideal "X-Y" coordinates, the 2-5 stock geometry frames that most closely match those "X-Y" coordinates, and the optimal stem and spacer configuration to match our ideal fit.

Our Bike Finder Fit Session includes:

  1. Personal interview to determine riding style, goals, physical concerns and limitations.

  2. Physical assessment to determine flexibility of hamstrings, quads and IT bands as well as joint mobility; Evaluation of foot/hip/knee kinetics, structural differences and functional strength.

  3. Check for neutral cleat position.

  4. Comprehensive body analysis using Bio Size™ fit station.

  5. Make incremental adjustments to the Purely Custom fit bike to make the necessary improvements and retest with Retül to compare. Repeat the process as many times as needed to achieve the optimum position.

  6. Receive a Retül-generated report of all the key measurements of your position on the bike, both before and after.

  7. Post fit consultation to discuss preliminary findings of which bike brands/models are the best match for you.

  8. 24-48 hours after fit, client will will receive a Bike Finder Report indicating the 2-5 bikes that are the best match for them, along with fitter comments on each bike.

Cleat/Shoe/Pedal Interface Fit with Insoles - For all Bikes

This fit specifically addresses the cleat/shoe/pedal "system."  It ensures that your clipless pedal interface is positioned according to your natural leg rotation during the pedal stroke - eliminating stress on the knee, ankle and hip.  This fit would be the starting point for anyone who has discomfort/pain in the leg or foot.  And this fit should be done whenever you have purchased your first clipless pedals or changed shoes, cleats or pedals.  For example, you have switched from a pair of Giro shoes to Sidi's or Look pedals to Speedplay Zero's.

Our Cleat/Shoe/Pedal Interface Fit session includes:

  1. Check for neutral cleat position as starting point

  2. Analysis of your foot anatomy and gait

  3. Determine correct "Q Factor"

  4. Analysis of rider's lower leg rotation while pedaling

  5. Adjustment of cleats on shoe to accomodate each leg's natural rotation

  6. Your own custom heat moldable Footbalance insoles
